This asset was created back in February 2022 while working for the International Committee of the Red Cross.
The entire reason of modelling this asset was for the use in VR in a training simulation to help train volunteers in UXO identification and then later on the start of explosive disarmament training.
I had to build up a library of photos of each asset – This one specifically the FAB500 was a bit trickier especially in the unexploded state, the use of these bombs dropped off dramatically after the opening days of the Ukraine-Russian Conflict. The Ukrainian air defence was much stronger than Russia expected so the use of bombs dropped off almost entirely within the first month.
The modelling process for the bomb was incredibly straight forward, I just had to be careful with the polycount to ensure it was optimised for VR use. I used the previous version as a base and went about damaging this one carefully in 3ds max
This was the second asset I had done with the ICRC and I received a lot of feedback and guidance from the team lead which really shows in later assets, on reflection the quality of the unwrap has improved on this asset compared to the previous one.
Texturing was done entirely in Substance Painter – The hardest one for this one was creating realistic damage that reflected the impact of this bomb being dropped and not going off.
The end result was for Unreal Engine 4 due to VR not quite yet being stable (At the time!) in UE5, later projects might be in UE5 as there have been discussions within the VR Unit about this – For the rendering I changed over to Marmoset - Currently just a free trial but so far I am enjoying the program and how quick it is. I especially love the interactive viewable model, it's far superior to Sketchfab.
