This asset was created back in February 2022 while working for the International Committee of the Red Cross.
The entire reason of modelling this asset was for the use in VR in a training simulation to help train volunteers in UXO identification and then later on the start of explosive disarmament training.
I had to build up a library of photos of each asset – This one specifically the FAB500 was a bit trickier, the use of these bombs dropped off dramatically after the opening days of the Ukraine-Russian Conflict. The Ukrainian air defence was much stronger than Russia expected so the use of bombs dropped off almost entirely within the first month.
The modelling process for the bomb was incredibly straight forward, I just had to be careful with the polycount to ensure it was optimised for VR use. I took great care to make sure that the asset was 1:1 in dimensions as it needed to be fit for purpose.
This was the first asset I had done with the ICRC and I received a lot of feedback and guidance from the team lead which really shows in later assets, on reflection the quality of the unwrap compared to my later ones is not really that good. I feel like I have improved greatly in the months I worked with the ICRC.
Texturing was done entirely in Substance Painter – The hardest bit was getting the Russian text onto the bomb as I was unable to get Substance to detect Russian letters, each one had to be imported as a decal.
I tried using Substance Designer to create a new font, but the same issue. In the future I need to look into what's causing this issue, my guess at the moment is product localisation. This is something to be resolved if I need to model more Soviet / Russian munitions.
The end result was for Unreal Engine 4 due to VR not quite yet being stable (At the time!) in UE5, later projects might be in UE5 as there have been discussions within the VR Unit about this – For the rendering I used Unreal Engine 5 as I enjoy using real time workflows as much as possible since getting an RTX card.
