This asset was created while working for the International Committee of the Red Cross.
The entire reason of modelling this asset was for the use in VR in a training simulation to help train volunteers in UXO identification and then later on the start of explosive disarmament training.
I had to build up a library of photos of each asset – This one was not the easiest one to find in good condition. Many pictures of these were the tube after firing in various states. The MRO-A is an RPG tube that you just dump once you've fired, it's surprisingly hard to find one that is not been fired to a good quality so you can see the various parts and what kind of materials are used in the construction.
The MRO is a Russian self-contained, disposable single shot 72.5 mm rocket launcher. The warhead is most commonly a Thermobaric, Thermobaric weapons are almost 100% fuel and as a result are significantly more energetic than conventional explosives of equal weight.
The modelling process for the MRO-A was quite straight forward once I had enough good references to work from, I spent a lot of time making sure that the model was as accurate as I could often receiving feedback from the lead 3D modeller at the VR Unit and getting feedback from contacts on the ground in Ukraine.
Texturing was done entirely in Substance Painter and was quite painless. Once I had identified the type of materials used in the construction of an MRO-A I was able to build up my texture and mask layers until I was happy with the final outcome. Being a single-shot weapon the wear and tear is not that extreme compared to other weapons with more moving parts, that being said these are carried around a warzone picking up all kinds of scrapes and bumps and so it was important the texture represent this.
The end result was for Unreal Engine 4 due to VR not quite yet being stable (At the time!) in UE5, later projects might be in UE5 as there have been discussions within the VR Unit about this – For the rendering I've used Marmoset as I'm enjoying the program so far and have been getting good results.
