The aim of this project was to try to create a historically accurate Roman Shield based on historically accounts from the time and artefacts from Museums.
Usually the Roman Legions would wrap their plywood shield in Leather to protect it from the Elements, but there was versions earlier in the Empire without the covering.
The hardest part of the project was actually the pattern on the front of the shield. I did the design first in Photoshop to get an idea of how it would look before importing parts as a brush into Substance Painter. I then cleaned it up more, added shading and the outline and extra details.
The model is around 17.5k Polygons, I could have lowered it further but wanted to keep it quite high to keep certain parts round and curved, it was also not optimised for a game engine and was made purely to look good. I could lower it further if I was to insert it to a game engine later on.
