This asset was created while working for the International Committee of the Red Cross.
The entire reason of modelling this asset was for the use in VR in a training simulation to help train volunteers in UXO identification and then later on the start of explosive disarmament training.
I had to build up a library of photos of each asset – This one specifically the 3of26 wasn't too hard as there were huge stockpiles of these tank shells and have seen considerable use throughout the ongoing conflict.
The modelling process for the unexploded version was very simple - I only really had to dent it and twist the shell fins. I had built up a good reference image library from various tank wreckages from across the conflict which gave me an idea for how the tank shells look after the tank detonates and the shells somehow survive the explosion.
Texturing was done entirely in Substance Painter - The hardest part for this was to create an almost "burnt" look to the material.
The end result was for Unreal Engine 4 due to VR not quite yet being stable (At the time!) in UE5, later projects might be in UE5 as there have been discussions within the VR Unit about this – For the rendering I've used Marmoset as I'm enjoying the program so far and have been getting good results.
