ICRC Ukraine Project | PTM1S Mine UXO

This asset was created while working for the International Committee of the Red Cross.
The entire reason of modelling this asset was for the use in VR in a training simulation to help train volunteers in UXO identification and then later on the start of explosive disarmament training.
I had to build up a library of photos of each asset – This one was harder to find as the PTM1S has not seen large usage but there have been quite a few showing up all over Ukraine, the PTM1S Submunition is a scatter mine deployed from rockets fired by platforms like the Uragan, Smerch and even Iskander. Once over the target area the rocket will separate scattering these over a large area. The PTM1S has delayed fuse so that they explode after a preset amount of time as well as longitudinally inside the landmine there would be a pressure tube that transmits pressure to the fuse causing it to explode, these are capable of taking out armoured vehicles. There are other submunitions that fit into the 220mm rocket fired by the Uragan which I'll talk about in the upload for that asset.
The modelling process for this asset was harder than the other two versions as I had the undamaged version to work from but I still had to break it. - To do this I deleted half of the shape and set about doing some extrusions and bends. Once I was happy with the look I used the shell modifier and cleaned it up before unwrapping.
Texturing was done entirely in Substance Painter. It was important for the asset to have a plastic-look to it as the shell of the mine is an acrylic. This was also the first version of the UXOs for this mine. I was asked to produce two versions, one which was muddy and slightly banged up and the other was a half exploded version. I struggled a lot to get the plastic explosive looking about right, strangely enough I found a really good substance that was intended for butter which had the waxy look I was going for.
The end result was for Unreal Engine 4 due to VR not quite yet being stable (At the time!) in UE5, later projects might be in UE5 as there have been discussions within the VR Unit about this – For the rendering I've used Marmoset as I'm enjoying the program so far and have been getting good results.
